A competition proposal for the design of a new office park development in an existing eco-conscious housing estate. The brief called for modular-designed office space accommodating up to 5700m2 on two adjacent sites with special consideration for the existing aesthetic of the estate as well as the indigenous flora. The immediate challenge was to interpret a commercial structure of the requested scale whilst keeping within the heavily regulated design guidelines for the estate itself, which was purely based on residential design. The most prominent design feature affected by these guidelines was the necessity to use a metal-sheeted pitched roof to specification. The combination of this given feature in addition to the design request for modular office space led Arkus to develop a per-unit design which can be repeated to requirement whilst being able to function independently of adjacent units which presented the possibility of phasing the construction if so required.
